Rajeeb Ji’s Spiritual Journey

Rajeeb Ji started taking yoga and meditation class, along with Sujit Guru, when he was in grade 8 and his life took a twist that no 14-year-old could imagine. During those classes Rajeeb got a taste of the inner joy that was unmatched. Even though he stopped going to the Yoga school after grade 10 as he got busy with the high school, Rajeeb continued to practice yoga and meditation himself.

After completing MBA, Rajeeb went to the USA to pursue a Ph.D. program. It was his dream since his childhood to go to the USA, a land of opportunity, innovation, and immense material progress. Lost in the material richness of the west, Rajeeb had decided that material progress is the real goal of life and forgot all about spirituality. Rajeeb was happy thinking that he was in the happiest place on earth with the happiest people. However, as months went by, Rajeeb got to know more and more of his American friends at a deeper level, he started realizing that his friends were not as happy as he thought. In fact, in terms the level of happiness, there was not much difference between them and the Nepalese folks. Rajeeb even met people who were taking medicine for depression even though they were in their early 20s. as Rajeeb became aware of this reality, it started to bite him. Rajeeb started asking, if all the material riches cannot bring joy, happiness, and contentment, then what will. “Why am I here in America? Why am I here in the world? Why this all drama?” As Rajeeb started asking these existential questions, a kind of sadness started to find a home in his heart. As time went by, Rajeeb started to feel lonely even amidst friends, feel sadness even in parties. His loneliness and sadness only got stronger as time went by and Rajeeb was on the verge of a depression himself. Summer of 2013 was the height of this experience. Rajeeb felt like he was at a bottomless pit surrounded by empty, dreary, and cold darkness. Not knowing what to do, Rajeeb decided to visit Nepal for a change. So, Rajeeb went to Nepal in December of 2013 during his winter vacation.

A few days after Rajeeb went to Nepal, Rajeeb met his childhood friend, Sujit, who shared with him about his spiritual adventure, about how he had left home and went to different parts of Nepal and India in search for the ultimate truth. Sujit shared with Rajeeb that all that they had learned about yoga and meditation back when in their childhood were indeed true! It left a deep mark on Rajeeb and got him questioning his own path in life. There he realized that while pursuing the material riches in the west, he had forgotten that what one is seeking can only be found within not outside. What his Yoga guru had told him 15 years ago started shining like the morning sun.

Determined that he will not be lost ever again, when Rajeeb returned to the USA in January of 2014, he started practicing yoga and meditation once again. At first, practicing meditation proved to be a very difficult battle. After a few minutes into the meditation session, there were surge of emotions within- restlessness, loneliness, emptiness, frustrations, pains, suffering, all came up with full force as if to engulf him whole. But these emotions became less and less overpowering after every sitting. After about a week of these meditation sessions the pains, emotions, and suffering subdued dramatically. Never in his life again, has he felt loneliness or that kind of pain and suffering. Meditation gradually became pleasant. Peace, contentment, and pleasure started to replace other emotions. Ever since yoga and meditation have been an integral part of his life. His days do not start and do not end without meditation. Rajeeb practices yoga and pranayama for about 1 hour a day and meditation for a few hours a day.

Rajeeb’s life has undergone a deep metamorphosis during this past 10 years. He has seen his whole body and mind transforming. Physically he feels much more energetic, healthy, and strong. He is joyous even in difficult life circumstances. Rajeeb has come to understand more and more that this world is “all in our head”. That we can choose to see things however we want. Truly our intelligence and emotions are infinite, and that we can choose right now what and how we want to feel, think, react, or respond in each circumstance. He strongly believes in “conscious way of living” and that meditation, by quieting our mind, gives us the strength to respond than to react to our desires and emotions. He believes that through the transformation of our thought process and through the control of our desires and emotions, we can be the master of our path and of our destiny. Spiritual practices not only empowers us to become the master of our own destiny, but also to help others see this bright light that shines within each one of us.
